Food for Thought Benefits Dallas Youth
By: Kim Garlitz

It was another incredible year for the Dallas Association of Young Lawyers’ Food for Thought at the Tower Club, a celebrity chef charity fundraiser supporting Big Thought. The remarkable generosity of the committee’s celebrity chefs, sponsors, event participants, and volunteers is an extraordinary example of a unified community outreach effort to help area youth. Because of this outpouring of support, DAYL’s Food for Thought was able to raise in excess of $15,000 for Big Thought, a Dallas-based nonprofit dedicated to closing the opportunity gap in education through creative learning.

The event featured more than a dozen celebrity chefs demonstrating their culinary expertise by providing samplings of their signature dishes to more than 300 guests. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Gavel of Excellence Award for Promoting Education to Ebby Halliday. Presenting the award was Jim Keyes, the 2009 award recipient and CEO of Blockbuster, Inc. Guests also enjoyed a silent auction and wine pull with Mistress of Ceremonies, Chris Hawes.

DAYL and its Food for Thought Committee graciously thank their celebrity chefs for donating their time and talents to make Food for Thought possible: Chef Tre Wilcox of Loft 610, Chef Lisa Garza of Pantry Organics, Chef Jeff Harris of Craft, Chef Greg Bussey of Victor Tango’s, Chef J. Chastain of The Second Floor, Chef Scott Blankship of The Tower Club, Chefs Jennifer Garcia and Stephanie Worsham of CucaLu, Chefs Randall Copeland and Nathan Tate of Restaurant Ava, Chef Ke’o Velasquez of Classic Residence by Hyatt, Chef Wilfredo Calderon of Chiloso Mexican Bistro, and Chef Dorian Isenberg of J. Dorian Chocolatier.

The most sincere appreciation goes to the event sponsors for the fundraiser: Tower Club Dallas, Hunton & Williams, Ernst & Young, Dallas Modern Luxury, It’s a Cooking Party, Whole Foods Market, Terry and Bev Heil, Christina and Sam Perrone, and Havran Law, P.C.

Plans are underway for the third Annual Food for Thought to be held in 2011. Please visit www.foodforthoughtdallas.com for further updates on scheduling a celebrity chef or securing a sponsorship. DAYL and the Food for Thought Committee appreciate everyone’s support for this fundraising event, and they look forward to an even bigger event next year.
