ABA YLD Update

ABA YLD Update

ABA YLD Ends Year in San Francisco
By:  Chip Brooker

In August, the ABA Young Lawyers Division celebrated the end of its 2009-10 bar year at the ABA’s Annual Meeting in San Francisco, California. It was bitter sweet for Texas lawyers because the meeting marked the end of Kelly-Ann Clarke’s term as the Division’s Chair. Ms. Clarke—a Galveston young lawyer and former member of TYLA’s Board of Directors—put an exclamation point on an exciting year for the Division, centered around her theme of “Making Lasting Connections, Both Personally and Professionally.” During her tenure, Ms. Clarke advanced TYLA’s They Had a Dream Too: Young Leaders of the Civil Rights Movement as the Division’s annual public service project, thereby increasing the project’s reach and introducing it to a national and international audience. Congratulations to Ms. Clarke and the Division on a successful year!

While one Texan exited office, another Texan entered office when Christopher Rogers of Dallas was elected to serve as the Division’s 2010-11 Secretary-Treasurer. Mr. Rogers—a former ABA YLD District 26 Representative—practices antitrust, while collar criminal defense, and securities litigation with Haynes and Boone, LLP. Like Ms. Clarke, Mr. Rogers will continue to uphold the strong tradition of leadership young Texas lawyers have provided the Division.

During the Annual Meeting, the ABA YLD held its biannual Assembly. The Assembly is the principal policy-making body of the ABA YLD. During the Annual Assembly, many issues of importance to young lawyers and potential resolutions for adoption were debated and then voted upon. For more information concerning the resolutions considered, please see the Assembly minutes here.

The next meeting of the ABA YLD will be the Division’s Fall Conference on October 14-16, 2010 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. For more information concerning the ABA Young Lawyers Division, please visit www.abanet.org/yld or contact your local ABA YLD District Representatives, C.E. Rhodes or Chip Brooker.
