ABA YLD Update

ABA YLD Midyear Meeting in Atlanta
By:  Chip Brooker

Do you want to rub elbows with young lawyers from across the country and around the world? Are you interested in being part of the policy-making body of the ABA YLD? Do you just need any legitimate excuse available to take your family to Atlanta? If you answered “yes” to any one of these questions, then you should attend the next meeting of the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division (“ABA YLD”), which will be held at the ABA’s Midyear Meeting February 10-12, 2011 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Assembly will be held at the ABA YLD Midyear Meeting. The ABA YLD Assembly is the principal policy-making body of the ABA YLD. During the Assembly, many issues of importance to young lawyers and potential resolutions for adoption are debated and then voted upon. By taking part in this event, you have the opportunity to have your voice heard and to help shape the profession. The Texas Young Lawyers Association (“TYLA”) will select and certify fourteen delegates from Texas to the ABA YLD Assembly, so if you are interested in serving as an Assembly delegate, you should express your interest to TYLA or your local ABA YLD District Representatives, C.E. Rhodes or Chip Brooker, as soon as possible.

Join us for the Young Lawyers Division programming at the ABA Midyear Meeting and return to your office with new insights, skills and contacts that will provide you with a competitive edge. Meeting highlights include:

• Networking Sessions and Small Group Discussions;
• The Young Lawyer Boot Camp;
• Diversity in the Workplace: Understanding Micro-insults;
• Attorney-Client Privilege and Interlocutory Appeals;
• Discovery Tools: Facebook and Other Social Media;
• Pro Bono Chapter 7 Bankruptcy for Seniors and the Disabled; and
• The ABA YLD Assembly (debate and vote on issues of importance to young lawyers).

The ABA YLD also invites you to apply for a 2011-2012 ABA YLD leadership appointment. Your skills, passion, and perspectives are essential to building a vibrant, inclusive, and multicultural corps of volunteer leaders throughout our committees, boards, and teams. The deadline to submit applications is February 15, 2011.
