Celebrate the Holidays by Helping Others
By: John W. Shaw, Whitaker Chalk Swindle & Schwartz, PLLC

For you, the holidays may a joyous time to spend with family and friends. For some, however, it is not as enjoyable. Consider parents who cannot afford to buy gifts for their children, homeless trying to find a meal, and elderly passing time alone in assisted living.

This month, young lawyers throughout Texas are helping others by donating toys for children, and by volunteering at shelters and nursing homes. The selflessness of young lawyers throughout the state of Texas is yet another reason that I am proud to be part of such an amazing group.

This December eNews highlights ways you can help the poor. Clint Harbour’s top story explains the benefits of the Prime Partner Program for IOLTA accounts. After reading Sally Pretorius’s article on the Ladies Night Out benefiting poor women, consider hosting a similar event in your city.

This eNews also contains advice for practicing lawyers. Justice Brett Busby gives tips for handling appeals. Eric Opiela provides an update on recent development in eminent domain for pipelines. Finally, Lee Ann Reno recaps the Amarillo Area Young Lawyers Association trial advocacy program.

The American Bar Association's 2012 Midyear meeting will be held February 6-12, in Dallas, Texas. Anita Barksdale and Jobe Rodgers give a preview of the Young Lawyers Division events.

Looking forward into 2013, if you have a story of a young lawyer helping others, or if you would like to write an article of interest benefiting our membership, please contact Bree Trevino.

On behalf of the Texas Young Lawyers Association, I wish you a joyous holidays and a happy New Year.
