TYLA Family Law Section Helps to Assist CPS

The Family Law Committee of TYLA has created a new project entitled What You Should Know About Your Child Abuse, Neglect or CPA Case. With a growing number of CPS cases in Texas and a lack of information available to the public about CPS, this resource seeks to provide information to the public about what to expect in a CPS case. The project is comprised of an informational handbook and a one page handout that summarizes the timeline of a CPS case. The handbook contains information about Child Protective Services (CPS), its policies and procedures, the timelines that all CPS cases follow through the legal system, the people who are involved in a CPS case, and explains what rights a parent or guardian of a child has when their child is removed from their home by CPS. The handbook also contains definitions and acronyms particular to the CPS system that will help parents or other participants in a CPS case follow the recommendations and findings of CPS.

The one page handout summarizes the timelines of a CPS case that is explained in more detail in the handbook. Attorneys and participants involved in the CPS system routinely struggle with the somewhat short timeline of a CPS case. This timeline gives the reader the information they need to know to effectively navigate through a CPS case and the recommendations and findings of CPS and the courts.
