Texas Access To Justice Commission Update

Texas Access To Justice Commission Update

General Counsel Forum & Texas Access to Justice Commission Inaugural Charity Golf Classic Raises $25,000 for Legal Aid

November 8 was not only a beautiful day in San Antonio but also a great day for Legal Aid. More than 80 golfers, including several Texas Supreme Court Justices, enthusiastically supported the Inaugural Texas General Counsel Forum Golf Classic, contributing $25,000 to the Texas Access to Justice Foundation.

The tournament, which was co-hosted by the Texas Access to Justice Commission, was held during the Texas General Counsel Forum’s Annual Conference and in conjunction with Magna Stella Awards Dinner. Marathon Oil Company was presented with the Magna Stella Pro Bono Award, which recognizes corporate legal departments that promote pro bono legal services within their department and their corporation at large.

Legal-aid organizations funded by the Texas Access to Justice Foundation help more than 100,000 low-income Texas families with their civil legal needs each year. Many need help with  issues critical to their very lives—spouses and children of domestic abuse; elderly denied life-sustaining prescriptions; veterans denied critical medical, disability, and other benefits; and families whose homes were foreclosed upon. Due to a lack of resources, only about 20 to 25 percent of these needs are being met.
