Editor's Column

I am writing this column a few days after the tragedy at the Boston Marathon. It devastates me that events like this happen in our society. While I did not have any connection to the tragedy, my heart still aches for those who did. It’s difficult to find the positive in such a horrible situation, but I think it can be found if we look hard enough. For instance, I believe we were once again shown that humanity at its very core is still good. This was evidenced by the people in Boston who ran towards the flames and carnage to provide aid and move barricades. These people selflessly put the needs of others before their own, and they embody the very definition of the word hero. Undoubtedly, they give us all something to aspire to.

I don’t know about you, but the events of the last few days have made me slow down a little and reflect on my tiny corner of the world. Sometimes I get so busy with life and conquering my to-do list that I lose perspective on what’s important. I tend to forget how blessed I truly am and how grateful I am for the amazing people that have been placed in my life and the experiences I am fortunate enough to have. It’s sad but true. I never want to leave a kind word unsaid or an opportunity for gratitude unexpressed. I also never want to ignore the chance to help another person. I want to strive to find the good in every situation. I know I’m guilty of neglecting all of these things, so my four-months-into-the-year-resolution is to take baby steps to incorporate these concepts into my daily life. I don’t want another tragic event to have to jar me out of complacency and into doing the things I should have been doing all along.
