Feature TYLA Project

If you’ve never been to Lubbock (which I can proudly say is no longer the case for me), you’ve likely never heard of The Children’s Home of Lubbock. It is home to numerous children and teens removed from their homes for one reason or another. These children find themselves at a difficult point in their lives. Luckily, The Children’s Home has a great staff in place that works to help them through this period, and, in some instances, place them into new homes.

Last month, TYLA conducted its quarterly Board meeting in Lubbock. Before traveling to the town of tumbleweeds and sandstorms, we contacted The Children’s Home to ask if they’d allow us to visit with the kids currently staying at their facility while we were in town. The Children’s Home proposed something better, however, by suggesting that we come prepared to play games.

So on Saturday, November 16, about 30 attorneys arrived at The Children’s Home of Lubbock to find 40-50 children eager to have some fun. And for the next three hours, the TYLA Board played a variety of field games with the kids that both adult and child alike thoroughly enjoyed. Afterwards, the TYLA Board selected the most spirited team by (how else?) seeing who could scream the loudest. Once playtime was over, TYLA presented The Children’s Home with over $800 worth of toys for the kids. The TYLA Board did all of this as part of this year’s Generation Generosity initiative.

The purpose of Generation Generosity is to have lawyers serve in the community to help combat the perception that some people have of lawyers. Whether we give money or time, the impact made on others is unquestionable. Not only are we changing the view others have of attorneys, I believe we’re also changing something within ourselves for the better.
