Texas Access To Justice Commission Update

Legal Aid Helps Texans Stay in Their Homes

The families of Las Lomitas were in danger of losing their homes until Texas RioGrande Legal Aid intervened. These families purchased undeveloped agricultural land in Travis County and spent years building homes and developing their own water supplies, septic systems, and roads.

Unbeknownst to the families, the developer who sold them the land had failed to properly register it with the county. When the developer finally did register the land, the county assessed more than $60,000 in retroactive property taxes. The homeowners had no way of paying these taxes and penalties and were in danger of foreclosure.

Fortunately, these families came to Texas RioGrande Legal Aid for help. TRLA was able to hold the developer accountable for the taxes that he owed while also working with the county to correct an error in how the interest and penalty fees had been calculated. The families of Las Lomitas ultimately owed nothing and were able to stay in their homes.

A surprising number of people in Texas are in danger of losing their homes due to administrative mixups, tax issues, or unscrupulous landlords. Many times these families and individuals aren’t aware that there is a problem until legal proceedings have been brought against them.
