A Salute to Families
By: Sally Pretorius, Andrae Law PLLC

With Mother’s Day and Father’s Day surrounding us, I am reminded of all the moms and dads who are out there.

Who could forget the parents who raised us and supported us through all of life’s challenges? The guiding stars that changed our diapers, taught us how to walk and talk, motivated us through our educations, and encouraged us when we thought we were going to fail law school or, worse, fail the bar. Our parents are amazing people who have sacrificed for our well-being and shaped us into the people that we are today. Where would we be without them?

Attendees at the May meeting of the TYLA Board of Directors were encouraged to bring their families to celebrate this past bar year and participate in Family Weekend. I was amazed at how many leaders there are in the community who are working countless hours to raise the integrity of the bar, billing their hours for work, and doing public service…all while raising babies, toddlers, or pre-teens! This year the two candidates for TYLA President-elect went on the campaign trail with newborn babies. On top of that, these leaders do it without complaint and with ease and grace. This year while we recognize our own parents, I encourage everyone to stop and think about the amazing mothers and fathers who work alongside us every day making this world a better place for their children and ours.

Many of us are fortunate enough to have at least one strong parent that guided us through our childhood. What about those children who don’t have anyone to look up to, those children that are within the foster system looking for that role model and that steady rock to guide them through life’s obstacles? This month TYLA is launching a feature project called A Welcoming Home: Be a Foster Family to encourage families to become foster families and welcome a foster child into their home. If you are interested in becoming a foster parent or distributing information to a local organization to encourage families to open their home, please email project co-chairs Patrice Childress and Sally Pretorius or contact the TYLA office.
