El Paso Young Lawyers Promote Young Lawyers’ Wellness

Given the hectic schedules we lawyers have between deadlines, hearings, families, and social lives, it is easy for us, especially young lawyers, to ignore taking care of ourselves. Because of this, the El Paso Young Lawyers Association came up with the Living as a Young Lawyer project. The project provides information to young lawyers about eating right, working out, and the importance of seeing doctors not only when sick but also for preventative health screenings. The project also includes presenting information available from the Texas Lawyers Assistance Program regarding mental health, depression, and substance abuse. The project will culminate with a 5K and 1-mile walk on June 9, 2013.

On May 2, EPYLA, with the help of a grant from the Texas Young Lawyers Association, sponsored a lunch presentation from Community Medical Clinic about those very topics. The presentation included a question-and-answer session where members asked Dr. Hector U. Lopez, a family and sports-medicine practitioner, about general health and fitness concerns.

Additionally, to motivate legal professionals to stay active and give back to our community at the same time, EPYLA will host its first ever 5K race, the Run for Justice, on June 9. Proceeds from the race will be donated to support the Houchen Community Center in South El Paso and the project to return Lady Justice to the El Paso County Courthouse. The Lady Justice statue was originally atop the 1886 El Paso County Courthouse. When that courthouse was demolished in 1917, the statue bounced around, ending up in a county park where it was severely damaged by time and the elements. She has been restored, and the plan is to install her permanently at the entrance of the El Paso County Courthouse. Houchen Community Center is located in the Segundo Barrio. It focuses on meeting the physical, mental, social, and spiritual needs of children, youths, and adults through programs including physical fitness, tutoring and mentoring, ESL, child development, a food pantry, and senior-citizen social functions. A portion of the proceeds will also be used to fund future El Paso Young Lawyers Association events.
