Lubbock County Young Lawyers Association Hosts Annual Golf Tournament
By: Elizabeth Hill
Looking for a sporting good time for your local affiliate’s members and legal community? A golf tournament draws in great member and community involvement while raising money for a good cause.
Each year, the Lubbock County Young Lawyers Association hosts the Johnny Splawn Memorial Golf Tournament. Named after a well-respected Lubbock lawyer and community leader, the Tourney is one of the most anticipated and well-attended events of the year for the entire Lubbock legal community.
On September 20, 2013, more than 100 golf players vied for bragging rights as the tournament champions. We encouraged firms to put together teams to compete against their adversaries on the golf course instead of the court room. When the competition heats up, players can purchase mulligans to gain an extra edge. To help raise money for a good cause, LCYLA members recruited tournament and hole sponsorships from local firms and businesses. As a result of the incredible turnout, we will be making a $3,500 donation to the Lubbock County Drug Court, a problem-solving court that reduces recidivism through treatment. That money will likely go even further since every dollar invested in drug courts saves taxpayers as much as $3.36 in avoided criminal-justice costs.
When hosting your own tournament, we recommend you select a golf course and club that works well with community organizations and is both affordable and accommodating. If you have questions or would like information on how to host a successful golf tournament, please contact Elliot Nixon or Marcy Erwin.
We would like to thank our sponsors and board of directors for making the Johnny Splawn Memorial Annual Golf Tournament a huge success: Marcy Erwin (President), Andrew Curtis (President-elect), Elliot Nixon (Tournament Director), Traci Siebenlist, and Levi Siebenlist.
