Texas Access To Justice Commission Update

National Pro Bono Week Reception

On October 21, the Commission and the Texas Access to Justice Foundation kicked off National Pro Bono Week with a reception honoring access to justice supporters, including Texas Supreme Court Chief Justice Nathan Hecht and former Chief Justice Wallace Jefferson. The reception was held in the lobby of the Austin office of Vinson & Elkins, and we were excited to recognize the law firms and individuals who have given their time, donations, and energy to help low-income Texans access the legal help they need.

We honored the Champion of Justice Law Firms who helped make this year’s annual Access to Justice Campaign a success. We also thanked Chief Justices Hecht and Jefferson for their years of advocacy toward making the court system more equal and accessible. It was a great night for celebrating pro bono and access to justice!

State Bar of Texas Care Campaign

Last month the State Bar launched the Care Campaign to empower attorneys who want to do pro bono service. In case you missed the most recent issue of the Commission’s newsletter, we spoke with Briana Stone and Vasu Behara, the two attorneys spearheading the campaign. Did you hear about the Pro Bono Challenge?

The State Bar’s Legal Access Division has issued a Pro Bono Challenge to the sections of the State Bar. The section with the most pro bono hours will receive special recognition at next year’s SBOT Annual Meeting. For more details on the rules and how to record your hours, visit the Texas Bar Blog.

Golfing for a Good Cause

On Thursday, November 14, the Commission and the General Counsel Forum will be hosting the Second Annual Charity Golf Classic at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort to benefit the Texas Access to Justice Foundation.

The Charity Golf Classic brings together general counsels, justices of the Supreme Court of Texas, and lawyers from across the state in support of access to justice for low-income Texans. It’s a great opportunity to network with your colleagues and play a round at one of the top courses in the country.
