“Have You Ever Experienced a Situation Where….?”
By: Kaylan Dunn

I can easily say that throughout my career, I have learned the most from those I practice beside. If you are anything like me, you too have benefited significantly from other’s shared experiences. Some call them war stories; others call them teachable moments.

Regardless of the name, the conversations often begin, “have you ever experienced a situation where….?” The answer is often more interesting and helpful, and inevitably, less straightforward, than you initially expected. These shared experiences—good and bad alike—can undoubtedly shape your approach to the situation before you.

But the sharing of experiences, these “lessons learned” on the battlefield, does not have to be limited to the seasoned attorney down the hall. Every day we are gaining unique experiences that can benefit one another, regardless of our tenure.

TYLA is over 26,000 young lawyers strong. We all have war stories to share that can benefit one another. If your experience has given you a unique insight on a topic, if you are well versed in a new area of law, or if you have had an experience that would present a teachable moment to a broad swath of young practitioners, consider writing an article for TYLA’s eNews. We’d love to hear from you, and your young lawyer colleagues will undoubtedly appreciate learning from your shared experiences.
