Corpus Christi Young Lawyers Association
By:  Lisa Huerta

The Corpus Christi Young Lawyers Association held its annual presentation of Baseball with the Bench on June 16, 2011. Baseball with the Bench is a Continuing Legal Education seminar followed by a Corpus Christi Hooks’ baseball game. The CLE portion of the event has always included a roundtable in which members of our local judiciary discuss topics presented by a moderator ranging from individual courtroom policies and procedures, to effective trial tactics.

This year CCYLA was privileged to have The Honorable Joel B. Johnson participate as moderator of the event. Judge Johnson worked with CCYLA board members to create a format of topics that would be engaging and relevant to many practitioners. The two-hour CLE seminar was comprised entirely of ethics credit and covered judicial recusal and disqualification, ad litem and criminal appointments and dealing with pro se litigants.

Each year, immediately following the seminar, CCYLA invites all of the judges and their guests to enjoy a baseball game at Whataburger Field. For $100, members receive admission to the CLE, a baseball game ticket in a private suite, as well as a free buffet and beverages.  Baseball with the Bench has gained recognition and success for bringing local judges and attorneys together in an atmosphere of collegiality.
