SAYLA Reaches Out to Young Lawyers with Children
By:  Patricia Vargas

The San Antonio Young Lawyers Association has a diverse membership with a variety of interests and needs. During the 2013–14 bar year, SAYLA initiated a new program targeting young lawyers with children. Many of these lawyers had little time during the week to spend with their children. SAYLA’s Family Fun Days provided multiple opportunities for our members to gather with their families and participate in events alongside other SAYLA families. This fosteed a network of support and friendship among our members. This programing was made possible through a generous grant from the Texas Young Lawyers Association, and included these events:

The Little Gym – Exclusive use of The Little Gym where parents and children could play together and participate in games and activities selected to promote each child’s physical development.

Alamo Drafthouse Movie Theater – Members enjoyed a private screening of Pixar’s Toy Story at the Alamo Drafthouse.

Fire Station – Members enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour of Fire Station 17. They were able to explore the fire truck, and the station’s firefighters held a demonstration during which each child was able to hold and spray water from the firehose. The event was followed by lunch at a local restaurant organized by the parents who attended the event.

Kiddie Park – Members had exclusive use of Kiddie Park where they were able to experience an evening of fun at the oldest children’s amusement park in the country.

San Antonio Zoo – Members participated in a one-hour tiny tots class focusing on the zoo’s African animals. Admission to the zoo for the entire day followed the morning class.

At each event, the attendees commented on how much they appreciated this new programming. The events attracted members who otherwise did not participate in SAYLA’s other events, such as happy hours or even our monthly membership lunches. Family Fun Days were a success, and SAYLA looks forward to planning similar events during the 2014-2015 Board year.

Patty Vargas is SAYLA’s President-elect. Her term as President begins on June 1. She is a shareholder at Duncan, Bressler & Liu, P.C., where she practices guardianship, probate, and estate-planning law. She is Board Certified in Estate Planning and Probate Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.
