New Year’s in August
By: Matthew L. Harris, Esq.

It’s that time of year again as August draws to a close and, in a time-honored tradition, back-to-school Facebook/Instagram pictures consume our computer screens.

Regardless of how old you are, somehow the beginning of a new school year finds a way to touch your life. You might be a law student getting ready for your first day of classes, a big sister wondering how your youngest sibling is already in high school, or a parent wondering where all of the time went that led to your little girl’s first day of kindergarten.

Like I said, back to school seems to touch us all.

However, just as celebrating New Year’s in January gives us the hope and optimism that comes with the beginning of a new year, there’s something about August that gives us that same feeling that something fresh and new is just around the corner.

Maybe it’s just me. Maybe I’m the only person who feels this way? Maybe I’m just really excited for the new football season that’s upon us and the fresh prospects of my alma mater’s roster.

As our 2017-2018 bar year begins heating up and TYLA cranks the volume to 11 on our projects, goals, and programs, I hope you’ll join with me in approaching it with the enthusiasm of a new year in August.
