The Team Luke Foundation
By: Neal W. Spradlin

On September 15, 2017, the Lubbock County Young Lawyers Association will host its annual Johnny Splawn Memorial Golf Tournament. The tournament serves many functions: (1) to build camaraderie amongst local attorneys through friendly competition; (2) to raise money to fund the LCYLA’s fiscal budget; and most importantly (3) to raise money for a local charitable organization.

The LCYLA always selects a local charity as the beneficiary for a portion of the tournament’s proceeds. Two years ago, the group selected Carpenter’s Church, a local church dedicated to helping the homeless community in Lubbock through special community projects, supportive housing, and as a ministry for these less fortunate individuals. Last year, the group selected the Veterans Resource Coordination Group.

The mission of the VRCG is to connect veterans and their families to the resources they need to assist them during times of transition and to make them successful in achieving their life goes. The VRCG is highly engaged in veterans’ mental health issues across the South Plains region, and specializes in identifying and stabilizing veterans who struggle in their transition to civilian life and gaining access to mental health and substance abuse treatment across a variety of federal, state, and community resources.

This year, the LCYLA is honored to have the Team Luke Foundation as its benefitting charity. Luke Siegel is a Lubbock boy who was involved in a golf cart accident on July 28, 2015. He suffered from major head trauma, multiple fractures, and collapsed lungs. Luke spent 44 days at a Lubbock hospital, needing numerous surgeries and procedures. Luke’s anoxic brain injury is severe, but he is working hard on his road to recovery.

The mission of the Team Luke Foundation is to bring awareness and provide critical support and assistance to families with children who have suffered an anoxic or traumatic brain injury. Luke’s story and the mission of the Team Luke Foundation are the embodiment of strength, faith, and love.

A significant number of the members of the Lubbock bar play in the tournament every year. Many of Lubbock’s local businesses sponsor the tournament and/or donate items to contribute to its success.
