Celebrating 80 Years of Public Service

Last month’s Annual Meeting marked the 80th birthday of the Texas Young Lawyers Association. When TYLA was founded in 1930 as the Junior Bar of Texas, its founding members could not have possibly comprehended that the organization would one day be receiving awards for projects like R U Safe? Protecting Yourself in Cyberspace, a series of videos designed to educate children and their parents about online dangers. However, it is likely that they did envision the organization continuing to carry out the mission for which it was founded—serving the public.

As TYLA enters its eighth decade, our members continue to develop innovative and important projects that serve our profession and the public. The founding members could not have foreseen that in its 80th year, the organization would develop a project called Office in a Flash, a tool kit for young lawyers hanging out their shingle that includes CLE podcasts, checklists and forms, all on a flash drive. They would have been perplexed by the idea of creating a job message board on the organization’s website. But they would be proud to know that after all of these years, TYLA still knows how to serve the public, using whichever modern means are necessary.

In this issue of eNews, you will read about TYLA’s accomplishments this past year, as well as what TYLA has in store for its 80th year. Come join the celebration - our members, profession and the public we serve would love to have you.
