Tips For Young Lawyers

Using the New TYLA Website as a Resource
By: Robert E. Booth

The new TYLA website at www.tyla.org offers many good resources for young lawyers. When accessing the TYLA website, click the Resources link at the top of the page to access the following resources under the “Lawyers” tab:

1. Career Center. Are you looking for a job, or do you have a job that you want to advertise? The TYLA online Career Center is a great place to start. You can post your resume, search or browse job listings and sign up for job alerts.

2. Member Discounts: TYLA offers information on how to access membership discounts, CLE and others, on everything from rental cars, insurance, web site design and clothing.

3. New Lawyer Survival Guide: A guide designed to provide fundamental information that new lawyers might not otherwise have at their fingertips. The Survival Guide provides new attorneys valuable resources to navigate through their first years of practice. The guide provides resource information in areas such as:

a. student loans;
b. professional help in times of need;
c. dues, taxes and CLE requirements;
d. establishing your own practice;
e. the composition of the State Bar of Texas and TYLA;
f. demographic information regarding young lawyers’ jobs and salaries; and
g. helpful websites for young lawyers.

4. Research: Go to the TYLA website to find quick access to free legal research resources.

5. Hangin’ Out Your Shingle: This program, which is comprised of a book and a 40-minute video, provides good ideas on how to run your practice smoothly and reviews some of the soul-searching issues facing lawyers when they start their own practice. The video covers the following six areas; (1) Should I Stay or Should I Go; (2) Client Development; (3) Office Logistics & Layout; (4) Hiring and Supervising Staff; (5) Work Product; and (6) Getting Paid.

6. Ten Minute Mentor: The site features quick access to the hundreds of informative mentoring videos.

7. Thumbnail Guide to Texas Ethics: The guide contains an overview of the attorney discipline process and some of the most frequently violated rules of professional conduct.
