ABA YLD Update

ABA YLD Update

By:  Jobe Rogers

Happy New Year from the ABA YLD!  In the season of resolutions and renewals, I want to take the time to let you know about some opportunities the ABA and YLD are offering to help you along your path to becoming a better lawyer.

First, the ABA Mid-Year Meeting in New Orleans is just around the corner; February 2-4 to be exact.   With more than 10 educational programs, you will surely find the CLE to keep you on the right path.   The YLD Assembly will also be meeting at the Mid-Year Meeting to debate and vote on several issues affecting young lawyers.  And because the YLD is concerned about the whole you, we have arranged for a special diet for the weekend throughout New Orleans to give your body a break from all the healthy things you have been consuming in January.  (You know you are going to cheat on Super Bowl Sunday anyway, might as well make a weekend of it!)  It begins with the Welcome Reception at the Old Absinthe House, and continues into Friday’s dinner/dance at Musée Conti Wax Museum.  It is also a great opportunity to network and meet other great lawyers from around the country.  As to be expected, there is already a large contingency of Texas folks going and we would love to see you there.  It is sure to be a great weekend!

Second, to help you with your resolution to be more involved, the YLD is accepting applications for leadership appointments for the 2012-2013 bar year. Young lawyers from around the country with a wide reaching perspective on the practice of law and the legal profession are needed to ensure that the YLD provides relevant, timely, and exceptional resources and services to our membership. Your skills, passion, and perspectives are essential to building a vibrant, inclusive, and multicultural corps of volunteer leaders throughout our committees, boards, and teams. The application deadline is February 15.

Third, registration is open for the New Partner and In-House Counsel Conference.  The conference will be held in Philadelphia, March 2 – 3, 2012.  This an exclusive event designed for lawyers that have recently made partner or gone in-house in the last three years.

Rewards of partnership or transitioning to in-house counsel come with a host of new opportunities, responsibilities, and challenges. This conference is specifically designed to help prepare individuals for their new role and future success.

Structured over two days, the Conference provides learning and networking opportunities to help new partners and in-house counsel:
• Understand expectations and anticipate needs
• Handle internal firm/company dynamics, ethical issues and risks
• Develop and manage successful relationships
• Make informed long-term career decisions
• Connect and brainstorm with their peers
• Build or expand their referral network
• Engage with top national practitioners including General Counsel

The discounted registration rate of $415 is available until February 10, 2012.  Group rates are also available. Visit www.ambar.org/newpartner for more information and to register.

Finally, nominations are being accepted for the the Rosner & Rosner Young Lawyers Professionalism Award. The award honors young lawyer commitment to legal and judicial ethics, lawyer professionalism, client protection, and professional regulation.  The recipient receives a lifetime complimentary membership in the ABA Center for Professional Responsibility, complimentary registration for the Center’s National Professional Responsibility Conference, and a complimentary one-year subscription to the web-based version of the ABA/BNA Lawyers’ Manual on Professional Conduct.  The nomination deadline is 3/31.

As always, if you have any questions about the programs outlined above, or about anything happening in the ABA or YLD, please feel free to contact me.
