State Moot Court Competition - Please help!
By:  Alex J. Bell and Shannon Steel White, Chairs of the TYLA Competitions Committee

As the State Bar Annual Meeting comes around every year, TYLA puts on a moot court competition for all of the Texas law schools.  We always need volunteers for judges so come early or bring a friend with a bar card and spend about an hour helping the next generation of lawyers learn the art of appellate argument.

The Texas Young Lawyers Association Annual State Moot Court Competition is on June 14-16, 2016, at the Omni Fort Worth during the State Bar annual meeting.  Seven Texas law schools will compete in this “round-robin” moot court competition, and the success of the competition is premised on recruiting quality attorneys to judge the oral arguments.  We still need attorneys to judge the following preliminary rounds:

Tuesday, June 14th at 8:30 a.m.                  Wednesday, June 15th at 8:30 a.m.

Tuesday, June 14th at 10:30 a.m.                Wednesday, June 15th at  10:30 a.m.

Tuesday, June 14th at 2:00 p.m.                  Wednesday, June 15th at 2:00 p.m.

Tuesday, June 14th at 4:00 p.m.

Volunteer attorneys will check in before each preliminary round; each oral argument will last 40 minutes; and, the judging panel will provide comments after the round.  In addition, before the competition you will be provided with the moot court problem, a bench brief, judges’ instructions, and a sample scoring ballot.

If you or any of your colleagues would like to serve as a judge, you can sign up here.

You can also email Shannon White with the day/time you want to judge, as well as the following information:  (1) your cell phone number, (2) preferred email address, (3) law school attended, and (4) graduation year.

Please pass this on to anyone who you think might be interested. We are looking for lawyers of all ages and backgrounds to serve as judges and we look forward to seeing you at the State Bar Annual Meeting!
